Spans that cross midnight

A span ending earlier than it starts is assumed to run overnight, so 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM is eight hours. That is almost always what was meant on a shift, and reporting a negative number never is.

Converting to decimal hours

Divide the minutes by 60 rather than moving the decimal point. Fifteen minutes is 0.25 hours, twenty is 0.33, forty-five is 0.75. Writing 7 hours 30 minutes as 7.30 instead of 7.5 understates the time by twelve minutes.

Minutes to decimal hours

The conversion payroll systems expect. Divide by 60 — do not simply move the decimal point.

Common questions

How many hours is 9 AM to 5 PM?

Eight hours, or 7.5 hours once a thirty-minute unpaid lunch is deducted.

How do I calculate hours worked with a break?

Work out the span between clock-in and clock-out, then subtract the unpaid break in minutes. An 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM shift with a 30-minute lunch is 8 hours.
